XT Catalyst
What are they?
XT catalysts are designed to support the growing needs of the electrolysis community by providing superior precious metal electrocatalysts. Our iridium-based catalysts are great for oxygen evolution reactions and for newly emerging CO2 Reduction applications. Platinum catalysts come in supported and unsupported versions with multiple grades. Our additional catalysts include 4 grades of ruthenium oxide and other alloys. With this expanded portfolio, we aim to provide researchers, OEMs, and innovators with the tools they need to drive the next generation of clean energy solutions.
Platinum Catalysts
XT Platinum Black and Platinum on Carbon (supported platinum) options are tailor-made for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR), and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in fuel cell and electrolysis applications. The ORR and HOR occur in a hydrogen fuel cell. For the ORR, platinum active sites provide a surface for molecular oxygen to adsorb and dissociate, allowing the oxygen to bond with protons and electrons, forming water. Alternatively, for the HOR, platinum active sites provide a surface for molecular hydrogen to adsorb and dissociate, allowing the generated protons to travel through an acidic proton exchange membrane (PEM) and electrons to travel through a current collector, providing electrical work, and recombine with the dissociated oxygen to form water. Supported platinum alloy catalysts can change the intrinsic bonding nature of platinum to hydrogen or oxygen, potentially improving performance.
For the HER in an electrolyzer, supported platinum or platinum alloys on high surface area carbon adsorb protons that were liberated from the dissociated water and combine them with supplied electrons from an external electrical power source to form and evolve molecular hydrogen.
Iridium Catalysts
Iridium-based catalysts exhibit exceptional catalytic properties, such as high activity, selectivity, and resistance to harsh reaction conditions. However, it’s important to note that iridium is a precious and expensive metal, which can limit its widespread use in certain applications. This is why iridium is often alloyed with ruthenium to create Iridium Ruthenium Oxide catalysts. FuelCellsETC’s proprietary blend of iridium and ruthenium creates a powerful catalyst that is ideal for the Oxygen Evolution Reaction (OER). Since carbon is not a conducive support material because it is consumed on the anode of electrolyzer applications, ruthenium often takes its place as a support structure.
XT Catalyst offers Iridium Oxide for sale in powder form, and Iridium Ruthenium Oxide applied to Membrane Electrode Assemblies.
Additional Catalysts
We offer XT catalysts in other variations as well, including precious metal, precious metal alloy, and non-precious metal catalyst. Many of these catalysts we offer in the unsupported form, or with carbon support. We can also produce certain unsupported catalysts in black form, or oxide form.
Our team is capable of creating custom catalysts for specific applications. Our custom catalyst options are designed to support a wide range of applications. Our capability to produce tailored compositions and blends enables researchers and developers to specify exact ratios, supports, and structures required for their target reactions; ensuring precise alignment with application-specific performance requirements. With a 5 gram MOQ, custom catalysts are accessible for both R&D and scale-up work.
