Description
Surface Oxidized Carbon Black is a high surface area carbon material derived from chemically modified Vulcan XC-72R. Through a proprietary oxidation process, hydrophilic functional groups are introduced onto the carbon particle surface to enhance wettability and dispersibility in various media including aqueous and polar media. The surface modification involves controlled acid treatment followed by wet chemical etching to introduce oxygen-containing functional groups, including carboxylic, phenolic, and quinone species.
This material exhibits:
- BET surface area (N₂ adsorption): 200 - 240 m²/g
- Average agglomerate particle size: ~ 21.34 µm
The presence of hydrophilic functional groups significantly enhances dispersion stability compared to pristine Vulcan XC-72R, particularly in aqueous and other polar systems.
Applications
Surface oxidized carbon black is suitable for a broad range of applications, including:
- Water-based inks requiring improved dispersion stability and jetability with minimal or no heavy surfactant loading
- Supercapacitor electrodes, offering enhanced electrolyte wetting and improved surface accessibility
- Fuel cell catalyst supports, particularly for direct methanol and direct alcohol fuel cells utilizing PtRu or other alloy anode catalysts, where improved catalyst anchoring to the support is desired
- Conductive polymer composites, enabling better integration into polar plastics (e.g., nylon, polyesters) for EMI shielding applications
- Electrochemical H₂O₂ generation, where surface oxidation favors the 2-electron oxygen reduction pathway over the 4-electron pathway
- Adsorptive removal of organic pollutants, including dyes and pharmaceuticals, from contaminated water
- Concrete and cement coloration, allowing improved dispersion into water-rich cement systems with reduced agglomeration
- UV protection in plastics, where improved dispersion enhances UV screening in agricultural films and piping
- Biomedical sensors, where surface functional groups enable covalent or electrostatic attachment of enzymes and antibodies
- and other applications benefiting from surface-functionalized, high surface area carbon materials.
A typical lead time of 1-2 weeks is expected for this product.
