What is a gas diffusion electrode?

A gas diffusion electrode (GDE) is a porous gas diffusion layer coated with catalyst. Gas moves through the backing to the catalyst, which faces the membrane or the electrolyte. Carbon paper or carbon cloth is the usual backing. A microporous layer (MPL), where used, gives the catalyst a finer surface and manages gas, water, and wetting.

Active area and die-cut size, paper or cloth (with or without MPL), wet-proofing, catalyst and loading, matched anode/cathode when needed — from research to OEM quantities.

Gas diffusion electrode applications

PEM and high-temperature PEM fuel cells, hydrogen-air and hydrogen-oxygen cells, direct methanol and direct ethanol fuel cells, and alkaline and anion-exchange-membrane electrodes. Selected electrolyzer and regenerative builds. CO₂ electrolysis, with silver for carbon monoxide and copper for carbon products. The anode catalyst is selected separately. Also zinc-air and aluminum-air air electrodes, electrochemical sensors, and hydrogen pumps.

Catalyst, gas diffusion layer, and coated electrode are made in the same building.
