Ruthenium oxide is a catalyst for the oxygen evolution reaction and the chlorine evolution reaction. It is used in work on chlor-alkali electrolysis, chlorate and hypochlorite production, electrochemical oxidation, water electrolysis, and pseudocapacitor electrodes. XT Ruthenium Oxide is an unsupported powder for inks, electrode development, and research. On a high-potential anode, carbon oxidizes, so the oxide is supplied without a carbon support.
Ruthenium black is the unsupported metal, used for alkaline hydrogen evolution and hydrogenation. Ruthenium on carbon disperses the metal on a conductive, high-surface-area support for hydrogen evolution and for ink work. It is not an anode catalyst for a PEM electrolyzer.
