Description

The XT 60% Platinum on Vulcan XC-72R Grade S manufactured by Fuel Cells Etc is a fine powder that can be used as an electrocatalyst in electrochemical devices and as a heterogeneous catalyst for the synthesis of various organics, such as the following examples:

  • As the anode and cathode electrocatalysts for proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells. In fact, Pt/C has been one of the most commonly used anode and/or cathode electrocatalyst for membrane electrode assemblies used in the commercial H2/Air PEM fuel cell stacks. Hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) is the main anode reaction. Oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is the main cathode reaction.
  • As the cathode electrocatalyst for proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers. Hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is the main cathode reaction.
  • As the anode and cathode electrocatalysts for alkaline fuel cells (AEM-based or liquid alkaline electrolyte-based). Hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) is the main anode reaction. Oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is the main cathode reaction.
  • As the cathode electrocatalyst for direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs). Oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is the main cathode reaction.
  • As the cathode electrocatalyst for direct ethanol fuel cells (DEFCs). Oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is the main cathode reaction.
  • As the working electrode catalysts in electrochemical gas sensors such as amperometric gas sensors for the detection of H2, O2, CO, etc.
  • Pt/C modified electrodes to enhance signal in enzymatic sensors.
  • As the reference/counter electrodes to establish a baseline or benchmark electrode via RDE for ORR, HOR, small-molecule oxidation, and durability testing
  • As the catalytic hydrogenation catalyst in organic synthesis such as hydrogenation of C=C, C≡C, C=O, nitriles, and heteroaromatic rings in pharma and fine-chem production; often as a cleaner alternative to Pd/C in sensitive molecules.
  • As a catalyst for the reduction of nitroaromatics to aromatic amines such as hydrogenation of nitrobenzene and halogenated nitroaromatics to anilines and related intermediates.
  • As a catalyst for the hydrogenation/dehalogenation of chlorinated aromatics such as hydrogenate and partially or fully dehalogenate chlorinated nitro- and amino-aromatics, relevant to both fine-chemistry and detoxification of legacy chlorinated compounds.
  • As a catalyst for the release of hydrogen from chemical hydrogen carriers such as dehydrogenation of dimethylamine–borane and similar carriers, enabling on-demand H₂ release in portable storage concepts.
  • As a catalyst for the continuous-flow hydrogenation systems for Pharma/Fine Chemicals such as Pt/C-packed flow reactors are increasingly used for safer, scalable, continuous hydrogenation of aromatic nitro compounds into high-value amines (pharma APIs, dyes, agrochemicals).
  • and many other electrochemical or non-electrochemical applications.

This product has a BET surface area of ~115-135 m2/gram. The average crystallite size for Pt nanoparticles is calculated as ~5.47 nm for this product. The average particle size for this supported catalyst material was measured as ~26.06 microns.
